We are ALL social media managers
Let’s be clear. All of us are social media managers. We just may not be getting paid for doing that job. Here are three important concepts to understand about social media platforms.
(1) Understanding that social media is only a distribution platform for content is foundational.
Too many people fall in love with a specific type of social media. And it is usually because that one is getting them attention or possibly even generating revenues.
But to have all eggs in one basket is always a poor business strategy.
(2) Focusing on Getting Attention Gets you Broke
Too many people chase vanity metrics and it is easy to understand why. Most monetization from social media platforms come from having a large amount of followers and viewer time. Yet, that is what the social media platform wants. It may not be what you want.
(3) Unlearning a Platform is More Valuable than Learning it!
The irony of every social media platform is that it will go through a cycle of working best for the users, then working best for the social media company, and then returning to working best for the users.
Why?
Well, the platform needs active users to grow.
Then when they hit their target growth level, they will try to take control. This will hurt the engagement of those that built it. It never works.
They then have to return back to putting the users first.

Emotional connection creates advocates and customers
The overall challenge with social media is to connect on an emotional level in a healthy way.
It is easy to connect on an unhealthy way. Just say something crazy. Yes, you might go viral. But you might go viral for all the wrong reasons.
So, how do we define a healthy connection?
Here are are key metrics
- Did you connect with someone who becomes an advocate or fan of your content. They may never buy a single thing from you. But they are important because their engagement puts you in front of their connections.
- Did they become a customer? This is a great start, but now the real work begins. Meeting and/or exceeding their expectations of your service or product.
- Did they become a repeat customer? Even better than number two.
- Did they become a repeat customer and deliver referrals? This is the best case scenario.
Five Core Emotions
The five core emotions are joy, fear, anger, disgust, and sadness.
Those are the easiest ways to initially connect with a stranger. And let’s be clear they really should call it stranger media rather than social media.
The key question is which core emotion are you targeting to start a conversation. A common mistake we see is people missing the initial connection.
Tips for connecting with Joy – share the good stuff, be fun, be light, and don’t ever worry about what others think of you.
Tips for connecting with fear – share from your perspective. What are your fears, concerns, challenges, issues, etc.. Allow the reader to connect from outside in because people are wired to help.
Tips for connecting with anger – first and foremost own it! Own your anger. What are you angry about? You don’t need to justify it. And remember anger is a healthy emotion because it can be constructive or destructive. That direction is up to you.
Tips for connecting with disgust – similar to anger but we suggest adding in a specific detail or two to back up your disgust. And whenever possible try to offer a possible solution to your disgust that is within your control.
Tips for connecting with sadness – the trick here is to own and not try to fix the sadness. Sometimes it really is time that heals us. Other things will never be fully healed, but we can find a way to walk with them in healthy ways.
